The Sewing Bee!

As you may know, on Saturday, we held another Charity Sewing Day at Christchurch Hall in Warminster-this time it was a Sewing Bee! And we had a number of different projects available for all different abilities.

We had another great turn out of wonderful people coming to donate their time and skills to some great causes.

We made 16 more pillowcase dresses for the Dress A Girl Around the World Project

We made 9 pairs of shorts for the boys-these will also be distributed by the Dress A Girl Around the World Charity-if you want to know how to make some simple shorts from an old t-shirt, I have done some a blog post with some instructions at My Make Do and Mend Year.

The dresses and shorts will be taken out to children who are living in poverty in the developing world. They get taken by charities who are going over there to perform other work (for example medical work) in order to keep the costs down. You can find out more about the project here.

And we made some simple heart shaped cushions for the Breast Cancer Unit at the Royal United Hospital in Bath.

Thankyou to each and every person who came and contributed their time and loveliness to another great day!

We will hopefully do another in the Autumn.

If you want to make some yourself in the meantime, all the information you need is here on the brilliant Sew Scrumptious blog :)

Charity Sewing Bee!

Following on from the resounding success of our Dress A Girl Around the World Charity Sewing Day, where we made 34 pillowcase dresses :) we are very excited to be holding a Charity Sewing Bee!

If the Great British Sewing Bee has inspired you to get out your sewing machine again, or to start sewing for the first time, then this is a great event to get you up and sewing in no time!

We will be back at Christ Church Hall (Upper Marsh Road, Warminster BA12 9PN) on the 8th June for a whole day of charity sewing (11am-4pm).

There will be several projects for you to choose from, whatever your skill level:

We will be making pin cushions for the breast cancer unit at the RUH.

The patterns and materials will be available to make more pillowcase dresses,

We ran out of hangers and space to display all the dresses, but here they are!

and also to make some shorts for the boys.

We thought we might have a small area set up with instructions for making fabric flowers/Suffolk puffs etc for you to embellish your dresses with, and if we run out of bias binding, a mini bias binding workshop might be needed!

We had six sewing machines pressed into action last time, and it wasn’t quite enough! So this time, we will have eight sewing stations set up, along with irons and ironing boards, and we’ll make sure we bring enough pins this time ;)

All the materials are provided (although any donations of fabric, pillowcases, ribbon, bias binding and elastic would be WONDERFUL!), all we need from you is an hour of your time :)

We had a brilliant day last time, and everyone who came seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves. Come along, meet some new people, maybe learn some new skills, and make a difference to someone less fortunate with little spot of sewing. And cake. There will be lots of cake :)

Dress A Girl Around the World

This Saturday, we Dressed A Girl Around the World!

And not just  one girl, 34!!!

That’s right, we made 34 pillowcase dresses on our sewing day :)

It was SUCH a great day. So many people came and it exceeded all of our expectations.

Thankyou so so so much to each and every person who came and gave up their precious time to come and make a dress (or two, or even three!) to really make a difference to a little girl’s life.

Here are some pictures from the day:

The pictures don’t do justice to the dresses and all their wonderful makers!

Thankyou once again to everyone who came, to Christ Church in Warminster for very kindly allowing us to use the Hall, and to my wonderful neighbour, who very generously covered the costs of the Hall hire as she was unable to attend on the day.

I have had several people ask where they can get the pattern from to make some more at home. All of the information you need is on the Sew Scrumptious blog. There is more information about the charity and some links to patterns here, the armhole templates are here, and the pattern instructions that we were using on Saturday were from are from an article Louise (the UK co-ordinator for Dress A Girl Around the World, author of the Sew Scrumptious blog, on-line fabirc shop owner, and all round lovely person!) wrote for Simply Homemade magazine and are here!

Would love to see some pictures if anyone makes anymore!

We had such a great day, we are doing it all over again on the 8th June! We have decided to have a “Charity Sewing Bee”, with a range of projects for all levels of sewers, including making more of these fab dresses.

So mark the date in your diary! Will post with more info ASAP :)

Dress a Girl Around the World

Come and join us this Saturday (11th May) for our Charity Sewing Day making pillowcase dresses for the Dress A Girl Around the World project.

This simple act of making a dress from a pillowcase (or other fabric) can have profound implications for the girls who receive them:

  • It gives them some dignity
  • It shows them that they are worthy of love
  • And it helps protect them from predators-if they are wearing a good quality dress with the Dress a Girl label on the outside, this indicates that an organization is looking after them and just maybe a predator will pass them over.

Isn’t that worth a little time and effort?

I first found out about this project through a fellow blogger by the name of Louise, from Sew Scrumptious. She started off making one dress, and is now the UK co-ordinator for the charity, and has sent over 4000 dresses to girls in need since then!

Here are some pictures of girls in Uganda wearing the latest shipment of dresses:

We will be at Christ Church Hall, on Upper Marsh Road in Warminster, from 11am-4pm on Saturday 11th May, with sewing machines, fabric, all the extra bits and pieces and tea and cake!!

Please do come and join us if you can.

You don’t need to come for the whole day-even if you only have an hour, that would be amazing.

You don’t have to be able to sew. We can help you, or you can cut out some pattern pieces, or make a pretty flower to decorate one of the dresses.

You don’t have to know anyone else who is going-we are a very friendly bunch, and you might even make some new friends!

So come on, what have you got to lose, except for an hour of your day? And you could have a whole lot to gain!

Did I say there would be cake…?!

PS. If anyone has any donations of fabric we can use on the day-lightweight pretty material, pillowcases, bias binding, ribbons/trims, then please do get in touch, and I can arrange to collect it, or you can drop it off on the day :)
